With all the hubbub surrounding the latest round of talks, shuttle diplomacy, and political agreements to re-start talks about a final status agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians, one might think that things are shining with idillic optimism, unseen since the days of Clinton, Arafat and Rabin.
However, any casual observer of the Middle East political scene will know that it is still quite premature to think that this half-happy reunion will bear fruit, let along a new baby borne of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
The editorial cartoon panel was published here first just a few days after the big White House fanfare announcing the nine month plan to “get together”, then talk, and eventually give birth to a new baby called A Final Status Agreement.
Whatever your perspective on the matter, it is fairly objective to analyze the situation and understand that the gaps remain wide between the two parties of the conflict, and that a brand news future of peace, salaam, shalom remains unlikely and doubtful at best.
Of course things may change, as is the nature of people and politics. And the more things change, the more they remain caricaturable.
So hang tight. We may have a bumpy ride in front of us, but at least we’ll still have what to laugh about.
I wonder what Tzipi Livni’s cravings will be, and how accomodating Saeb Erakat will be to massage her feet and fetch her strawberry ice cream and pickles at 3:30am.
